Trojans put up a tough match against Piedmont

Just moments before the matches began on Oct. 11, the first eight players–four singles and two pairs of doubles– were warming up with their opponents as the remaining players analyzed the skill of the Piedmont tennis team.

The general consensus between the observing players, even before the first ball was served, was that the Trojans easily had the win.

“I’m not really nervous… I just want food,” said sophomore Malin Johansson. Freshman Kaitlyn Wong commented that “they look good, but I’m not nervous right now.”

Lilit Shahbazian on the JV team had a more philosophical perspective, “I’m confident that our team will win, but that’s not what’s important. Whatever we do, whether we win or lose, we tried our hardest. It’s about the perseverance and endurance, because either way, we are winners.”

Although the Trojans could not claim the win, they were still winners, just as Shahbazian said.

“I think that even though we lost, we won in our spirits; it’s important to persevere through adversity and challenges no matter what circumstances! We did a great job and I’m really proud for my team, said Shahbazian.

Piedmont won 6 – 1 against the Trojans varsity team. CVHS won only four of 18 total sets played by Elena Lottich, Anya Mortensen, Gaby Madison, Helena Liu, Lauren Leong, Sammie Lee, Kele Fong, Alex Tam, Sky Kim, and Tania Beringer.

Kim and Beringer’s doubles match lasted the longest, and was the closest match of the day, with set scores of 1 – 6 (7), 4 – 6, and 7 – 5.

“Today was a great day to play tennis. Although many of our varsity players couldn’t make it, everyone played their best game. We look forward to playing our last match at Piedmont in a few weeks,” stated Kim.
