Poetry Power: “Ocean Waves”

The next poet to be featured for National Poetry Month is junior Alicia Lee with her piece “Ocean Waves”. “This poem is about the 5 senses: Hear, see, touch, smell, and taste. It’s a journey from life to death and seeing the loved ones you’ve lost. This my first poem I ever wrote and it’s based on true events in my life,” she said.

Ocean Waves

I hear the waves crashing on the sand.

I see the seagulls flying in the sky.

I touch the warm sand with my toes.

I smell the salty sea air of the waves.

I taste the heat of sunlight on my face.

I hear you in my head yelling for me to stop.

I see ocean waves below me.

I touch my heart and soul.

I smell the blood in my veins.

I taste the mark of death on my tongue.

I hear the wind rushing to my ears.

I see the water coming to meet me.

I touch the rope and let it go.

I smell the scent of your spirit coming to catch me.

I taste your sweet kiss that I’ve missed since you left me.

I hear the sound of singing bells.

I see the Gates of Heaven.

I touch your hand and pull you along.

I smell the sweet scents of the air.

I taste our eternal destiny.

I really love the repetition and consistency at the beginning of each line; it really adds to the tone of the poem. The sense of urgency as the poem progresses is really nice too, and the entire thing flows really nicely. The story/experience being told is also very clear, while also not giving the entire thing away with too many details. Very nice 🙂
