Science Olympiad makes it pasta competition

CVHS Science Olympiad (SciOly) placed in regionals and headed to states with a goal to make it to nationals in Nebraska, “Go CORN!”

Two years ago, the Trojans competed incredibly well, making it to nationals in Wichita, Kansas, and leaving some big shoes to fill for the 2024-2025 competitors.

Science Olympiad (SciOly) is a club where students educate themselves to compete in academic competitions. CVHS students lead teams of about 15 other students, each having a fun theme every year, this year centering around pasta. The Trojans’ executive committee (ExComm), consisting of seniors Maya Dughi, Anna Dughi, Jolene Lo, Sean Chen, and junior Lauren Yee. Students orchestrate meetings, with lessons and practice tests on the topics they’re competing in, to further their understanding and readiness for competitions.

“We have such a large program that extends to the elementary school level. It’s exciting to know that Science Olympiad will continue for years after we graduate,” said Chen.

Each team makes commitments to meet after school and gather multiple times, including weekends. “My favorite part is the super team, SciOly isn’t a club, it’s a family,” said Anna Dughi.

At the Nor Cal state comp, CVHS earned many medals, including first in events such as Robot Tour, Dynamic Planet, Experimental Design, Fossils, Material Science, and Code Busters.

The Trojans finished second in events including Electric vehicle, Optics, Tower, and Wind power, and placed third in Forensics, Entomology, and Write it do it.

Ultimately, CVHS placed second overall for Northern California, which sadly doesn’t qualify for nationals, as only first-place winners advance. But still earned a respectable 30 medals in their 15 events!

Still, Maya Dughi thought the team did spectacularly. “I’m so proud of our team and how we’ve grown throughout the season,” she said.
