Girls basketball team scores a victory

CVHS varsity girls basketball emerged victorious in their game against San Leandro High School on Jan 15. With the game appearing staggeringly close as the minutes counted down in the first two quarters, CVHS secured the win in the second half, the final score 49-40.

There were a number of great plays that brought the CVHS triumph. While the game seemed neck and neck in the first half, with the Pirates having a slight lead, the Trojans never gave up, and kept fighting for the win.

“It’s important to keep your morale up by keeping your energy up in different ways, like cheering even for the smallest things like good defense or even taking a good shot even if missed,” stated sophomore player Sarah Yang.

This win was the first in a short while for the Trojans, breaking a minor losing streak. The girls have been diligently practicing and continuously sharpening their skills to increase progress. There were many things that contributed to their triumph at the game, but one distinct factor proved particularly important to their growth.

“I think our growth over time was most responsible for our win at home. Our coach, coach Tucker, says, ‘A loss is only a loss if you learn nothing from it.’ Weeks ago we had taken some pretty hard losses, but we learned what not to do and how to change and adapt to be successful going forward. We practiced hard and watched film day after day,” commented Eden Teclemariam, a senior on the CVHS team.

Altogether, what matters most is for the Trojans to enjoy playing their sport and progress as a c team, continuing to work together regardless of who may be winning at certain points in the game.

“I was most proud of my team when San Leandro was in the lead and we regrouped and just started playing as a team and played how we are capable of playing,” said team player Alicya Robertson.

The Trojans won their highest points with an astonishing 9 from Yang, 11 from Alanys Robertson, and a top score of 12 from Teclemariam.

The team hopes to keep consistent with this energy throughout the rest of their season.
