CVHS Robotics Club builds disk throwing robot

Room 407b transforms into a hub of innovation and collaboration on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Here, the Robotics Club, now under the leadership of sophomore Jordan Tran, comes alive with creativity and the thrill of competition.

Tran rose to fill the role of club president to guide his team through training and preparations for regional tournaments across the Bay Area. This year, they aimed to perform well in the First Robotics Competition (FRC), renowned as one of the foremost events in the world of high school robotics.

The FRC presents a formidable challenge to aspiring engineers and innovators. Each January, teams worldwide receive a new task which is designed to test the limits of their ingenuity and technical prowess. This year, the Castro Valley Robotics Club embarked on a mission to construct a robot capable of launching soft disks into specific targets and navigating obstacles with precision, something sophomore Skylar Luong enjoys about the club. 

“Something I like about robotics is the challenge it provides and how it forces students to think intuitively to design something that works for a certain goal,” said Luong.  

Their creation also had to ascend a chain, adding an additional layer of complexity to the task. 

Despite the daunting nature of the challenge, Tran and his team approached it with zeal and determination. Hours of meticulous planning, designing, and testing culminated in a robot that showcased their dedication and skill. When the competition season arrived in April, the Castro Valley Robotics Club held its own against fierce opposition, securing a commendable 31st place out of 60 competitors.

However, Tran emphasizes that the journey doesn’t end with competition season. During the off-season, the club delves into the intricacies of robotics, imparting valuable knowledge to its members. From designing to constructing robots using spare parts, every session is an opportunity for growth and learning. 

“What I love about robotics is the camaraderie that grows over time as you’re forced to work together and I think that’s one of the big pluses of working on the team,” claimed sophomore Enrique Guerrero De Dios.

For Tran, the allure of robotics extends beyond mere technical proficiency. It’s about camaraderie and collaboration, about working together towards a common goal. “I was always very passionate about STEM,” he reflected, “and Robotics is a great way to express yourself through it.” The joy of witnessing their creation come to life on the field, scoring points and overcoming challenges, fosters a strong sense of unity and teamwork among club members
