Trojans top Highlanders in boys varsity soccer

The Trojans varsity boys soccer team secured a dominant 3-0 win against Piedmont High School on Jan. 20 at Trojan Stadium, pulling ahead with decisive second-half performance after a scoreless and tightly contested opening half. Strong contributions from both the offensive and defensive lines, including key players such as forward

Ali-Jandro El Sheikh and defender Tristan Ayllon helped seal the shutout.

The first half of the game opened with a high energy but little scoring, as both teams struggled to maintain possession and convert opportunities into goals. Frequent throw-ins and midfield turnovers defined the early minutes, with the Trojans working the ball through short passes while Piedmont attempted to push play forward with long clearances.

Despite several promising sequences, Castro Valley was unable to capitalize early. A stumble near the Piedmont goal disrupted one potential scoring chance, and multiple passes into the attacking third were intercepted or forced out of bounds. Piedmont responded with brief stretches of possession, but the Trojans’s defense held firm, with the goalkeeper making key saves to keep the game level.

Midway through the first half, Piedmont earned a penalty kick after a physical challenge in the box. However, the Trojans’s goalie came up with a crucial save, preserving the 0-0 tie and shifting momentum back in the Trojans’ favor. Shortly after, the Trojans made multiple shots on goal, including a penalty kick and a corner kick opportunity. Both were stopped by Piedmont’s goalie in a strong defensive showing.

The raminder of the first half remained physical and tense, with both teams battling for control and several stoppages due to out-of-bounds plays and minor injuries. By halftime, neither side had broken through with a goal, prompting an on-field pep talk from the Trojans’s coaches as players regrouped and substitutions were made.

The second half told a very different story.

The Trojans returned to the field with renewed intensity, applying sustained pressure and keeping the ball in Piedmont’s half for extended periods. Although early attempts sailed wide or over the crossbar, the Trojans’ persistence eventually paid off. Castro Valley struck twice in quick succession, breaking the deadlock and forcing Piedmont into the defensive.

As the match progressed, Piedmont struggled to recover momentum, while the Trojans continued to control possession and create chances. A late substitution for a goalie did little to slow the Trojans, who added a third goal to secure the win and complete the shutout.

By the final whistle, the Trojans’s second-half dominance was undeniable and well celebrated.

“We definitely could have finished more chances and scored a few more goals, but I think it was a really good game,” said Ayllon.

“We can make NCS for sure, and we have a really strong chance of winning it. We have to play our best each game and show up ready,” El Sheikh said.

The team’s ability to adjust tactically, remain composed under pressure, and capitalize on scoring opportunities proved decisive in the 3-0 victory.
