Library archive preserves yearbooks, newspapers and more
In this day and age, it’s common knowledge that practically everything online will be preserved one way or another through databases and digital archives. However, archiving physical media is another challenge in itself.
Fortunately for our school, the CVHS library has an archive which houses thousands of physical documents from our school, ranging from yearbooks to every published issue of The Olympian newspaper.
The library has opened an archive of every newspaper ever published by the school. Every Olympian newspaper ever produced, going back to the 1950s, is open to use by every student.
The archive was created by CVHS senior Garrett Marenco and was inspired by his teacher, Keanu Dasalla. Students can use the archive to see how high schoolers reacted to events and to see how people have changed over the years.
“Students could use the archives as a way to learn what people who were living through these worlds,” said Garrett.
A cool example of an old article is the old Olympian segment, “Dear Flabby,” in which the newspaper would respond to letters submitted by students.
You can go to the library and access the archive physically, or later on, uploaded to a website.
The library will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony at lunch on Jan. 29. You can sign up for this event on the school website’s library page. At the event, there will be hot chocolate and a speech from Marenco about making the archive.

Trying to keep our school memories physically and digitally is so wholesome. It’s cool that we are trying to stop our students and their work from fading into the past.
I’m going to have to check this out the next time I go to the library!
This is really interesting! I think what they did with this is really important and goes a long way of preserving history. I’ve always wondered about school life back when it the school first opened and now we can easily access it!
This is so cool! The creation of the CVHS archive is such a meaningful step toward preserving our school’s history and student voice. Can’t wait to check it out!
This is incredible work! It is really amazing to see people have this much care to preserve local history in this way.
