Badminton Blasts off with a Win
Breaths held, rackets up high, and eyes right on the target, the CVHS badminton team spins the birdie right into a victory for the team. The team’s last home match of the season brought them yet another dominating win, representing a season gone well.
In their match against Arroyo on April 24, CVHS swept with a crushing win, each varsity player having won their match.
“My team improved a lot from this season and we really have a strong team since we are trying to be league champions,” said junior team captain Chloe Miao who went on to sweep her opponent in a deliberate 21-10 and 21-2 win.
“[We’re] much more dedicated and [the] energy level is higher than last year,” added coach Teddy Yau. Much of the team consisted of freshmen and sophomores and many of them had improved, “especially the JV players, they started from beginners,” Miao explained.
“[My goal] is to play against strong players from other schools and improve my scores overall against those strong players,” said Miao.
The team has had an undefeated season so far this year, from their very first victory at their first home game to their 14-1 win at their last home game before championships.
The key to securing their victories were stunning slams of the birdie onto the opponent’s side of the court at an angle where they couldn’t hit it back.
“[We] practice everyday [and] learn to work together with our teammates,” said freshman Ellysandra Ly on the JV team.
The players have the option of playing singles, doubles, or mixed doubles during their games, each consisting of two set ups to 21 points. In the event that a player or each team wins each set, they go on to a third.
With the amount of hours and dedication to the sport from players, the season’s been “really good and we win all the time,” according to Miao.
