Olympian achieves success in journalism contests
Olympian staff members won 42 awards from groups such as California Press Women as well as Outdoor Writers Association of California. The class hosted a memorable ceremony night to celebrate this year’s hard working students on May 14. This is an incredible achievement for CVHS, highlighting the gifted staff of the journalism class with our outstanding school newspaper, The Olympian.
Editor-in-Chief Hailey Young was named Olympian editor of the year, as won awards from California Press Women and California News Publishers Association (CNPA). She helped The Olympian grow and reach new levels as a writer and editor.
“As The Olympian’s editor of the year, I’m grateful that my leadership as editor in chief was recognized, and that I could give back by guiding our amazing production and writing teams this year. I’m also very proud that my news stories were awarded by the various journalism associations because they highlight important groups and events impacting our campus and community,” said Young.
Many other students won awards as well as they expressed their pride and accomplishments.
“For the last three years, I’ve been very proud of all of my accomplishments in journalism,” said senior Maison Jordan. “I am so happy to have these multiple first place awards not only for my writing but also for my video making ability and teamwork with others. I have worked really hard and become The Olympian’s most published writer, and one of our biggest award winners. I used my time to write about what I wanted, mostly being film and television, and local shows.”
Students like online editor Grace Lopez won awards for photography also.
“I am really proud to have won an award for one of my photos, because even though people are uplifting about my photos, an award really tells me that my photo was good,” said Lopez.
Lopez had won three outstanding awards for all sport featured photos, each one capturing dynamic moments from athletes that bring the journalism stories even more to life.
A highlight for the full staff was winning general excellence awards from CNPA.
Many more of the staff received recognition for their work this year as part of the journalism class. The CVHS journalism’s talent and commitment was definitely celebrated at the awards ceremony. It is clear that this year was a huge success for The Olympian with so many gifted and hardworking students on the team this year.
