School fire causes disturbance
Fire and smoke damaged the boys bathroom in the 200 hall after a roll of toilet paper was lit on fire by an undetermined person. Firefighters came onto the school premises and extinguished the fire on Sept. 26.
“The firefighters came into my classroom to use my fire extinguisher,” said English teacher Elisa Frozena, who was teaching a class in the 200 hall during the fire.
The fire started around 2:30 p.m. and firefighters promptly came around 2:40 p.m. to extinguish the fire. One classroom was evacuated for the remainder of the period and students were not allowed to reenter the premises.
“It messed up the curriculum I had planned,” said English teacher Jen Clyde, teacher of the class that was evacuated. “We had to put some things a day off.”
The administration believes a student started the fire but have not identified one. The bathroom was closed off with trash cans and yellow caution tape but reopened by the following week.
The smell spread all throughout the 200 hall classrooms near the bathroom.
“The fire smelled like burnt paper, but it was not smoky,” commented Frozena on the smell of the fire.
“The smell wasn’t as strong as you thought it would be” said junior Emma Young, “and not many people people knew that there was a fire.”
The fire was not widely publicized by school officials and many students did not even know that there was a fire during seventh period. Some students were shocked to find out about the fire from their friends.
“I didn’t know there was a fire,” exclaimed sophomore Samantha Chin. “Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
With the fire now over, students are now openly joking about the event.
“Wow, it seems that the gases in the boys bathroom really are combustible,” said junior Vivian Chiu.
