Revolution in room 106 with Kara Wilkinson

“You’re a peasant, you’re a peasant, you’re a peasant.” Walking into room 106, students were met with either confusion or power. The few lucky students were crowned King or Queen, and others became lords. As the bell rang and class started, peasants were handed paper and scissors, the lords a task, and the King and Queen sat on their phones scrolling happily. It was the French Revolution, CVHS style, led by a Modern World History teacher, Kara Wilkinson.

A former student of CVHS, Wilkinson has been teaching for 12 years. Meeting and connecting with new students, returning to her old campus and working with her former teachers has made her experience even more meaningful.

“I had really great teachers here that made learning fun, it seemed like a good experience, and they’re still here today, so they’re obviously dedicated and good teachers,” Wilkinson said.

With her high school teachers making an impact in her life, she continues to do the same with her students through creative and fun slides, watching movies, simulations, and games.

Her dedication to making sure her students learn in a fun and engaging way is clear. She takes time in answering every question students might have, showing her hard work, making everyone feel welcomed, a quality that stands out to many students.

Though being a teacher in any subject has its ups and downs, the usage of AI is definitely a major factor now, especially with it being more accessible to students.

“Definitely has made things harder and complicated, it’s harder to evaluate what students are learning and what’s generated for them, so we’ve changed to doing a lot more things on paper versus online,” Wilkinson said.

Even with those challenges, Wilkinson continues to inspire the same excitement for history that once inspired her.
