Women’s March protests Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett
About 50 people met at CVHS, marched down Redwood Road, Castro Valley Boulevard, and looped back to CVHS on Saturday, Oct. 17. The marchers protested President Donald Trump’s nomination of Amy Coney Barrett as a Supreme Court justice.
“I organized a Women’s March to fight for economic justice, racial justice, and gender justice of women,” stated CVHS sophomore Rebecca Ireland.
Many of the protesters also advocated to stop Trump from being reelected, and supported the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden.
The crowd chanted “Respect her wishes,” referring to Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s wish to not nominate another Supreme Court justice until after the 2020 presidential election. Some people held up signs saying “DUMP TRUMP” and “Girls just wanna have fundamental rights.”
Cars honked and people cheered from their cars as they marched on the sidewalk. One woman held her ballot out of her window as she drove past the protesters. The public seemed to support the march.
Unlike the past protests, the participants were predominantly white and middle aged. The protesters remained peaceful as they marched on the sidewalk instead of blocking traffic by walking on the road.
“I support women’s rights and I don’t want to see Amy Coney Barrett shoved into RBG’s position on the Supreme Court,” explained CVHS senior Lindsey Gard.
I think that we should get a different supreme court judge. If Donald Trump elected the judge, then they have no respect for women’s rights, because Trump has NO respect for anybody’s rights except for his own, but we could have a worse Judge. We could have gotten Brett Kavanaugh, who it the worst judge ever, but Amy Coney Barrett. We can get her out of the office, because we don’t have Trump in office anymore. Once Trump gets dragged out of the office, then we may as well get a better judge. I think that it’s a smart and intelligent idea to do a peaceful protest, because that’s what we should do. We have the right to protest and that is a 1st amendment RIGHT, and that can’t be violated at all.
It’s amazing that women are taking a stand against the nominated supreme court judge Amy Coney Barrett, because people’s voices need to be heard.
I am so happy women in Castro Valley have been taken a stand to protest Amy Coney Barrett. A lot of people don’t seem to understand how significant the impact will be for another conservative to be placed on SCOTUS. The SCOTUS is responsible for the rights we have today and with another conservative on the court, the rights for a lot of people are in danger. Thank you to everyone who participated in this march. Your voices matter and continue using your voices to make the change you want to see.
