CVHS boys volleyball team defeats Amador Valley

The CVHS boys varsity volleyball team won their home game against Amador Valley 3-1 on March 4, an exciting victory worth celebrating. As the volleyball soared through the air, players scurried across the court and got into position. Many family members and friends came out to support their fellow Trojans.

The varsity boys volleyball team performed spectacularly. They left the crowd on edge throughout, with moments where the crowd held their breath in anticipation with each hit and pass of the ball. With the first set, Trojans had won with a score of 25-18. Already, they had begun devising a strategy.

“Our team strategy was to form a more solid block on the outside hitters and opposite hitters,” said sophomore libero Mason Lim.

Senior outside setter Ethan Lunes and senior outsider hitter Max Fruin had cinematic teamwork; often, Lunes launched the ball high as Fruin responded, delivering a powerful kill.

Lunes didn’t only support, but he also defended.

Often, their kills left the crowd roaring in excitement as their combo followed their team’s golden standard perfectly: kill them, and play the hardest and cleanest you can.

During timeouts, the Trojans utilized their time, analyzing their opponents and adjusting themselves in response, striving towards victory.

“We emphasized how to make corrections and I’m glad to see them implemented,” said Head Coach Susan Louie. “We noticed once they started getting blocked, they started thinking and pushing it over rather than attacking.”

As the game progressed, the major turning point in the match for Lunes occurred when he solo blocked an opponent, shooting the ball down, and directly winning a point. From there, the match went uphill during the fourth set.

“Calvin Guiomar played really good defense, really stepping up this game,” said Lim. “He was very reliable despite not playing in a year because of soccer.”

Both Guiomar and junior Alex Winn contributed majorly to defense. Winn had many notably solid blocks against the Dons.

“The toughest part is staying in the right headspace even if you’ve lost five points in a row because every set is winnable and you can come back from that,” stated Winn. “The most important part is believing that you can.”

Having a strong mentality is crucial to being a star player. After enduring a tough hurdle, it can be very draining to a player’s mentality. Despite that, players are encouraged to persist.

“They’re fighters, they keep fighting and coming back and even when they’re behind. They don’t let the adversity hold them back,” stated Louie.

So far, the Trojans have won all their home games, contributing to an impressive streak.
