Varsity flag football makes a comeback at senior night

Varsity girls flag football Trojans made the most insane comeback against James Logan for Senior Night, winning 13-12 at CVHS on Oct. 17.

The first quarter had only begun warming up, with the score ending 0-0 for the first quarter. When the second quarter started, unfortunately, James Logan scored a touchdown, making the score 0-6. After though, Trojans would even things out with a touchdown of their own. With the Trojans scoring one more point after, the first half ended in the Trojans’ favor, 7-6.

“Pretty even game so far. Both defenses are playing well. I’m glad to see the growth of girls flag football in high school,” said Trojan spectator Deacon Arbor.

The start of the third quarter right off the bat had a first down.

Trojans could be heard cheering on their players with phrases such as “Let’s go defense!” and “Go CV!”

With another first down, there were no actual score breakers and the third quarter would remain absolutely stagnant with no score change.

Going into the fourth quarter however, James Logan would score five points, unsettling the Trojans with the score now being down 12-7.

As the game heated up, both defenses fought tirelessly as the timer continued to tick down.

Outstandingly, senior varsity player Evie Rhoe had put in the work for her team with 21 solo tackles, making their defense impenetrable.

Despite that, things looked hopeless with the score still down and many looked visibly stressed as the timer continued to tick, putting the Trojans in a dire position.

It was only at the very last second of the game that freshman quarterback Erikka Flores would score an insane touchdown, securing the game for Trojans 13-12.

In a flurry, friends and family rushed down the stadium, hugging and cheering as they congratulated the players.

“I really enjoyed the energy of my team and everyone who came to support us today. Making the winning touchdown as a freshman feels amazing; it just makes us come together and makes us stronger,” said Flores. “Love this team!”

Other varsity teammates shared similar sentiments regarding team chemistry.

“I really enjoyed the energy everyone brought even when we weren’t winning,” said

sophomore varsity player Jannah Duqmaq “I loved cheering on my teammates and seeing everyone celebrate.”

CVHS girls flag football will take on Alameda for their last league game of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 21. If they win, their WACC Championship game will be hosted on Oct. 23.

“Its not about how you start,” said senior Niko Kaneshiro, who spectated the game start to finish. “It’s how you finish.”

This was a really nice article to read; I love how well you highlighted our girls flag football team. I remember getting to cheer at that game and it was really fun to see how hard they worked and that in the end they were successful!
