Track girls crush competition at WACC Championship
Lively activity filled the Hayward High Stadium as the intense sun shone on the athletes. Tents from different schools filled the bleachers, and brightly colored flags decorated the field on Friday, May 9. Athletes stretched on the grass, preparing for their events. Families in the bleachers cheered as athletes raced past them, growing louder as they approached the finish line.
CVHS girls varsity track dominated the WACC League Championship, placing first, with a team score of 151, out of ten schools. Bishop O’Dowd finished second with a team score of 106. The boys varsity track placed fourth out of ten schools. Many athletes finished in the top three in various track and field events, from strenuous runs and short sprints to pole vault and discus.
Running the dashes, Idara Essien finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.64, second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.61, and second in the long jump event with a distance of 18-08.25, a PR for this event.
Hailey Smith ran the dashes, finishing second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.70 and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.73.
Running the 400-meter dash and 800-meter dash events, Haley Perez finished third with a time of 59.36 and a PR of 2:20.37, respectively.
Leaping over the hurdles and sprinting, Zoie Li finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.68.
With the long-distance events, Iliana Nierengarten finished strong in the 1600-meter dash with a time of 5:09.74 for second place, and third in both the 800-meter dash and 3200-meter dash with times of 2:20.84 and 11:51.19, respectively.
With the field events, Samantha Pereira finished second in discus with a distance of 97-00, and Hannah Murry finished third in pole vault with a height of 7-06.00.
All the girls relay teams finished in the top three, the 4×800-meter team finishing first, the 4×100-meter team finishing third, and the 4×400-meter team finishing third.
The boys varsity track team had notable victories. The 4×800-meter boys relay team finished first. With field events, Nathaniel Belli finished first in discus with a distance of 153-02, and Zachary Watson finished second in high jump with a height of 6-02.00.
