Pope Francis’ legacy after twelve years

The Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, passed away on April 21. He died at his residence in the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City, following a cerebral stroke that led to irreversible cardiac arrest. Hundreds of thousands of people showed up to the Vatican City to pay their respects to the beloved Pope, who was seen to be the modern and progressive religious leader that supported immigration, focused on climate change, and endorsed modern issues such as homosexuality.

Pope Francis was always referred to as the “People’s Pope,” as he was almost always considered as an equal by Catholics, especially by many Southern American immigrants who saw the Pope as a figure of forgiveness and welcoming. Advocating for immigration was one of the Pope’s main priorities. There were many instances where he welcomed and personally spoke to immigrants that came to Europe from all corners of the globe.

“He always wanted to try new things and better the shape and image of the Catholic Church,” said senior Giovanni Yanez, a Catholic. “I do not think anyone massively attacked him for his liberal ideals and in my opinion, he still kept his core values in line. I feel like he did a lot.”

The Pope was also known to call individuals who wrote him letters, personally visiting the sick and imprisoned. His simple lifestyle, such as refusing the papal palace in favor of a modest Vatican guesthouse, symbolized his belief that leadership must be grounded in service. This humility endeared him to millions and helped reshape how the world sees the Pope in the modern age.

“I think Pope Francis was such a great Pope because he is one of the purest examples of humility and inclusivity in his papacy,” said senior Matthew Aguas, a Catholic. “He was a very humble individual, even up to his death, and he had progressive stances on important issues. It was very sad to hear about his death considering what he has done during his time as Pope.”

Pope Francis leaves behind a Church transformed by compassion, humility, and courage, believed by Catholics. As the world mourns his passing, his legacy endures in the lives he touched and the hope he inspired across faiths and nations. The cardinals of the Vatican will commence voting in the new Pope in the Vatican soon.
