CVHS students show support for gun control
Even in California, the state with the lowest firearm mortality rate per capita, gun violence is still a very large problem. According to Giffords, 43,000 Americans die from gun violence every year. In the past ten years, there have been 382 mass shootings just in California.
Some students here at CVHS had enough of hearing about mass shooting one after another on the news. The Activism Club recently had two protests against gun violence, one at CVHS and another at the corner of Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard.
During the protest at CVHS on Friday, the Activism Club spread awareness by passing out flyers with statistics on gun violence and promoting the regulation of guns. They finished with a lie-in to show support for victims of gun violence. By the end of lunch, many students were lying down in support.
At the corner of Redwood Road, club members toted signs and shouted messages of anti-gun violence, such as “Regulate guns!” and “Say no to gun violence!” Many passing cars and people showed support for the students, by honking their horns.
“I [and club members] were tired of seeing on the news people dying from gun violence,” said the Activism Club President Natalie Bennett. “We wanted something to be done.”
A CVHS freshman who was there agreed.
“There’s just a lot of gun violence in schools and so I just feel like as a student, it is my duty to [have my voice heard],” they said.
Bennett also had a very strong message for anyone that wants to make a difference in the world: “If you have an opinion, and you want to get it out there then get out there.”
