¡Nos gusta Profe Canela!
Imagine walking into your foreign language class every day but instead of endless boring lectures and piles of homework, you learn with music! Well in Profe Canela Gearou’s Spanish 2 class, you don’t have to just imagine.
Starting every class with a welcome song, lessons begin with a burst of energy, making her space one of comfort and positivity, the perfect classroom environment. Gearou’s methods of teaching are not solely based on repetitive memorization, but with catchy tunes that engage your brain, a fun way to make learning more rewarding.
“Profe’s teaching style is unique in a lot of ways. I would say it’s most special in how she sings things she teaches. Her question word song is super helpful for memorizing to me. She’s an amazing teacher and I’ve honestly never had one that can make a classroom into a community like that before,” commented sophomore Tyler Louie.
Gearou’s usage of music and games have developed along her many years of teaching and getting to know her students to understand how they learn best.
“I think that Spanish 2 is this really unique blend of students who have been in Spanish 1. Some of them are super pumped to be in Spanish 2 and some of them sort of struggled through Spanish 1 and there’s potential for them to lose interest. I think it’s important to create lots of opportunities to have the kids enjoy each other’s company, converse about themselves, and to build relationships. I want them to want to use Spanish as much as possible with their friends,” Gearou stated.
Not only does she make learning fun, however, Gearou forges a very safe and comforting environment for all her students through the genuine care she has for each and every one of them.
“I love how involved she is and how accommodating she is to everyone’s needs because you can tell that she wants the best for all of us in Spanish. I always walked out of her class in a better mood than I walked in,” reflected junior Mariana Escobar, one of Gearou’s past students.
Gearou started her work here just over 12 years ago. Prior to accepting the job offer, she nearly decided to quit teaching altogether. Yet after substituting in for another teacher for a few weeks, she rediscovered her passion, and chose to stay. What a great change in fate that was, because otherwise CVHS would have missed out on such a dedicated addition to the school.

I loved having Profe Canela for Spanish 2! Her songs and games made learning so much more fun, and she always made the classroom feel positive and welcoming. She really knows how to make learning Spanish enjoyable.
