From CVHS alumnus to school secretary
Coming back to the place where it all started, Kareem Munn, a proud alumnus CVHS class of 2021 graduate, shows that sometimes life really does come full circle. From being a student walking these halls to now working in the main office as the first male secretary, his journey proves that new opportunities can grow from familiar places and that representation really matters.
After graduating from CVHS, Munn continued his education with purpose. He earned his AA Degree at Chabot College, went on to Sacramento State for his BA, and is now working toward his masters at San Francisco State University. Each step of his journey shows his drive to learn and keep growing, something that clearly carries over into his work today.
When asked about being the first male secretary, he admitted that he didn’t realize it at first that he was working with many women in the office.
“It’s pretty interesting,” Munn said. “Education is often seen as more women-focused when it comes to teaching and staff, but it’s nice to represent males in an educational setting to show that this is an option for them too.”
Returning to CVHS has been a meaningful experience for him. “It feels really good,” he said. “It feels familiar. I love that I’m able to reconnect with some of my old teachers and staff, and I already know the area since I was here for four years.” His reflections show a deep appreciation for the community that helped shape him and a gratitude for being able to give back in a new way.
On a typical workday, Munn starts his morning by managing substitute plans and making sure teachers have everything they need to start their day smoothly. In the afternoon, he focuses on assigning activities, assisting staff, and keeping the main office organized. Whether it’s answering questions in person or over the phone, he plays an important role in supporting the people who keep CVHS running every day.
Outside of his work, Munn keeps life balanced with hobbies that truly bring him joy. “I like to bowl,” he shared with a smile. “I actually have a league every Friday. It’s pretty fun, and I like hanging out with friends on the side.”
Looking ahead, Munn hopes to continue learning and growing in his position. “I look forward to just growing as a person here,” he said. “Working in the front office, you make a lot of connections, and I’m looking forward to meeting new people and gaining new skills.”
Counselor Kory He shared her thoughts on Munn. “I really appreciate how calm and composed he is,” He said. “He brings diversity and a positive energy to the office. It’s been a pleasure having him as part of the team.”
“He’s a fabulous addition to the main office. I’m glad Mr. Fortenberry had the opportunity to select him for this role,” said Mo Brosnan.
“I strongly believe Mr. Munn has had a solid impact on the main office. In just a matter of months he’s managed to uplift the spirits of every student that walks in there,” said senior Kaila Crane.
Being the first male secretary at CVHS is just one part of his story. This is also about how he has grown, the challenges he has faced, and what it means to return to school that helped shape him and give back.
