“What a way to make a livin”

Tied up and outsmarted, Hart never saw it coming. While it may not always be the best idea to hold your boss hostage, eventually enough is enough. Doralee, Judy, and Violet feel power flowing through their veins as they take back control of their lives. They look forward to the end of Hart’s tyrannical rule, for all of that stolen happiness to be delivered right back to them. They are ready to “Shine Like the Sun,” just as the curtains close and Act 1 concludes.

This year’s fall production, “9 to 5,” is based on the 1980 film starring the beloved Dolly Parton. The film was later adapted into a musical which premiered in 2009. The plot follows three women— Doralee, Judy, and Violet—who have grown weary of their boss, Franklin Hart’s constant misconduct. They possess a shared desire to seek revenge upon him, although this quickly gives way to chaos as accidents occur and plans are discovered.

The show opens at the end of this week, on Friday, Nov. 7. The performances will happen on Nov. 7, 8, 9, and Nov. 13, 15, and 16. Tickets are $20 generally and $15 for students.

CVHS has combined intricate sets, beautiful costumes, and astonishingly gifted actors to bring this story to life. The performance has two casts, A and B, with different performers which gives an opportunity to showcase all the widespread talent at our school. To keep everything organized and performance ready, there are challenges the crew and cast face together and overcome.

“The hardest thing is just maintaining everything. ‘9 to 5’ is a very prop heavy show. Keeping track and making sure everything doesn’t go missing is really important to the success of the show,” commented Elsa Madsen.

Not only do the students collaborate to deliver a marvelous performance, the musical also provides a welcoming community to meet new people and make everlasting friendships.

“With the musical, everybody from a whole bunch of different grades comes together and works together on a really big project over a long period of time. And that has made me friends that I can rely on who I might not have talked to otherwise, which is super cool,” reflected cast member Ari Worsley.

As wisely put by Ivan Reaves, who plays Franklin Hart Jr. in Cast B, “’9 to 5’ is a super funny comedy. It had a little bit of everything for everyone. It’s a really great ‘everybody’ show.”

Aside from all the jokes and romance however, what makes the show truly great is the consistent effort put into the production from cast and crew alike, so make sure you don’t miss it!

I thought 9 to 5 was an amazing show. As a senior, it is definitely my favorite musical out of the 4 musicals I’ve seen. The songs, comedy, performance, props, and costume design were simply just amazing. Everyone who contributed to this play did a tremendously good effort! CVHS’ drama never seems to disappoint. If anyone hasn’t seen the show yet, there are still showings this weekend and I highly recommend that you see it. This article did a wonderful job of summing up the play and how great it truly is.

  • I like this a lot, it gives a good summary of the story and tells us good information like when it’s on and etc. I like how the paragraphs are not too long and they give very brief info, but it’s straight to the point.

I worked on this show as part of the Technical Theater class, and I helped usher during opening weekend. Let me say, it is a thousand percent worth watching. So much love and hard work went into the set design, and the actors/actresses and crew alike worked themselves to death putting this on. If you have the chance, I seriously suggest going to see it. It’s an absolute blast.

I usually don’t enjoy these types of plays but 9 to 5 is genuinely pretty good, the performance of the actors is quite amazing at the very least. Like I said, I’m not a fan of musicals but I have to admit that the singers have a really great voice.
