“YOMI Hustle” hustles your next move
When playing fighting games, have you ever wished you could stop time for a moment to think about how you’re going to go into a combo or avoid an enemy’s attack? What if you could? And what if your enemy could? Hence, both of you fight as perfectly as possible, which results in a game where you have to study and predict your opponent’s every action in order to win.
“Your Only Move Is Hustle” (“YOMI Hustle”) is a game where you can do just that. The game plays like a mix of chess and rock-paper-scissors, where almost every move has the correct counter, and you get all the time in the world to think about what your character does for the next quarter-second.
Typically, the timer is set to a 30-second or a 30-minute chess timer to keep the game going, but you could set it to be hours and practically have forever to think.
For only five dollars, “YOMI Hustle” lets you decide every minute of action, literally frame by frame. This may sound boring, choosing what to do at every moment, but at the end of the battle, you and your opponent get to watch the replay where the fight runs in real-time, showcasing an epic battle straight out of anime, no matter how bad you play.
A huge part of the game is to predict your opponent’s moves. Playing against new players, you can easily find what they’ll always do in common instances, but at higher levels, players have to be more unpredictable to win, while predicting what their opponent will do.
This certainly makes the game stressful, as you only have 30 seconds to overthink what your opponent will choose out of about 20 to 30 possible actions, based on their current state.
You can only really decide what has the highest probability of hitting your opponent into a continuable combo, without being countered. And there’s also the mental overhang from your opponent messaging you while you fight, which could be helpful advice, or a feint.
At the moment, there are five characters, each specializing in a different style, rather than a franchise like other fighting games.
Wizard, Ninja, Mutant, Robot, and Cowboy. In short summary, they are: Zoner, rushdown, aggressive rushdown, brawler, and chess, respectively. If that doesn’t satisfy you, there are always hundreds of modded characters to play.
There are numerous mechanics to keep track of, and people like to compare the GUI to the controls of a commercial airliner. This allows a lot of advanced mechanics and strategies from other fighting games to show themselves, such as but not limited to BnB, DI, footsies, frame advantage, IASA/FAF, Okizeme, and other unique mechanics in the game.
In summary, “YOMI Hustle” is an engaging fighting game at the speed of chess.
