King honored at district event

Students from Castro Valley Elementary, Creekside Middle School, Canyon Middle School, CVHS and a speaker presented poems, a song, speeches and a slideshow about Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 19.

This was the organization’s seventh annual presentation for King, and first presentation with Dr. Cherina Betters, a well known public speaker who has won many awards for her speeches and presentations.

Dr. Betters spoke about a mission that all communities should be focused on completing. In the mission she talked about diversity, education, and clarity. She spoke about how important it is for younger people to take education seriously, and the flaws in the education system right now.

For clarity, she spoke about how each member in the community should be clear with each other and how everyone should be able to trust each other. She emphasized how trust was the foundation of community and how everyone should be able to trust one another.

For diversity, she said that a mix of cultures and peoples were important for the community, because if a community had no diversity then everything and everyone would be the same. She also spoke about the importance of learning about other cultures.

Her final, and most important point, was education. “In schools light looks like opportunity, love looks like belonging, and leadership is choosing both even when it’s hard,” Betters said. She believes that the education system with all its flaws fail to prepare children for life later on, and how each student should see themselves in the reflection of the school.
