Vaccine Mandate Coming to CV soon

California will require public high school students to vaccinate for Covid-19 to attend in-person learning following full FDA approval of the vaccine for teens, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced.

California becomes the first state to require students to vaccinate starting the semester after FDA approval, probably in 2022. The Covid vaccine will be added to the list of other required vaccines such as the measles and mumps vaccines.

The majority of staff and students in Castro Valley are already vaccinated. “The great thing is that in Castro Valley we have very high vaccine rates in our population of people who are 12 or older. Eighty percent of Castro Valley’s population that is 12 or older are already fully vaccinated. Within our schools, more than 90 percent of our teachers are vaccinated and almost 98 percent of our classified staff are vaccinated,” said school board member Dot Theodore.

Many parents are not happy with this mandate which brings the question about what to do with students who refuse to get vaccinated. When asked what will happen to these students  Principal Blaine Torpey stated, “I don’t make the rules so I’m not in a position to say, but once I receive guidance and the rules we’ll go from there.”

It seems that most students support the mandate though. An Olympian survey of more than 100 students shows that 91% claim they are vaccinated and another 81% say they support a student vaccine requirement.

“I approve of the new Covid vaccine requirement for public school students because it will make our community safer for all. Since students and teachers are sitting in classrooms for long periods of time and are walking the crowded halls, it is reassuring to know that (soon) everyone around me is vaccinated and healthy,” said junior Nikoletta Limnios.

It’s crazy to think that we are this close to being back to normal! Just to think on March 13, we thought we would be back to school in 2 weeks!

It’s good that this is happening because it ensures the health and safety of the CV community.

I feel like this will make the campus more safer as if we guarantee that the people are vaccinated there should be less cases if anymore pop up on campus and overall we will have a better experience on campus.

The more we get people vaccinated, the more to goes back to normal.

I think implementing a vaccine mandate in schools is one of the most basic steps to take in slowing the spread of Covid. It also helps everyone feel safer. Many vaccines have been required for students to attend school for years, so requiring the Covid vaccine is not a crazy new idea.

I think now that California stepped up and became the first state to require students in public schools to vaccinate will make other states also require it. Also, getting all of the students vaccinated will make Castro Valley High School a safer and a healthier place.

I think that this is the right step if we want to slow the spread COVID. We are already required to have other vaccines so this isn’t anything new.

I think that it is good that there will be a vaccine mandate in schools. It will help students like me to feel less at risk of contracting COVID. Really, it is not any different than any other required vaccine. Since it was fully approved by the FDA, I am confident that the vaccine is safe for high school students and teachers.

I’m very excited for the vaccine to be mandated at CVHS so I can feel more comfortable in classrooms and during lunch when nobody has their mask on.

I think that we need to EDUCATE people on why vaccines are important before implementing ANY mandates, and everyone needs to know why they are important, and we should make something where anyone who can’t get the vaccine MUST be exempt from any vaccine mandates, and should NOT be fired, put on unpaid leave, or suspended from their jobs, we can NOT punish people for being disabled, or for having a medical condition.
I am FULLY vaccinated, and I don’t have ANY disabilities, but I think that people need to NOT be prejudiced towards the disabled people, and I think that we need to NOT punish them for having disabilities, and I am just speaking for those people.
