Boys basketball team suffers close defeat
CVHS Trojans were stung by the Hornets as they went against Alameda High School for a boys varsity basketball game on Jan. 13, with the game ending at a close score of 80-77.
A few seconds before the end of the third quarter, guard Zander Harris attempted a field goal but ended up assisting Bernard Waldon-Hose, successfully making a dunk right before the buzzer. This allowed the Trojans to be five points ahead going into the fourth quarter with the score of 64-59.
“This game teaches us how to make sure we play all 32 minutes of the game, close it out, and don’t get too comfortable when we have a lead—just keep our foot in, pedal to the metal,” said head coach Terrell Carriere.
At the start of the first quarter, the Trojans were falling a bit behind but eventually caught up and tied the score at 24-24. After a dunk, they were slowly gaining momentum and took the lead.
As it seemed like the players were starting to make a comeback, the score ended up tying again at 40-40 eight seconds into the second quarter. A few dunks and free throws made by Harris allowed the game to continue at a fast pace.
“It was an all-around team game, so I think everybody played good. We were all connected on each side of the floor playing as a team,” said Harris.
During the fourth quarter, the Trojans were dealing with a tight game and were barely ahead, the score being 67-66. Although the team called a timeout 12 seconds before the end of the game when they were two points away from a tie-breaker, the Hornets gained possession of the ball and scored.
“We have a team ball kind of concept. All the guys pushed in and did what they were supposed to do. Zander had a really good offensive game tonight. We also had other guys like Krishawn McGee, Jacob Price, and everyone who came in and played some really good defense, so it was a team effort,” said Carriere.
Prior to this match, the Trojans were on a three game losing streak, but they currently have an overall record of ten wins to eight losses.
The players will attempt to take the win at their next game against Berkeley.

I like that you got interviews from the coach and at least one of the players as well as highlighting the good things that happened in the game because even though they lost its good to acknowledge the good things they did in the game rather than just focusing on the fact that they lost.
very close game, it was fun to watch.
