Mariners sink Trojans, 49-40

The Trojans suffered a defeat on Oct. 10 to Moreau Catholic High School by a score of 49-40.

The game was close until the fourth quarter when the Mariners took control despite a late score by the Trojans. This is the first year with new head coach John Trotman, and the first year will always be turbulent. But this seemed like anyone’s game near the end, and the Trojans were unable to capitalize on that.

The first quarter started off well with a touchdown by Zayde Hickman over Mariner defender Jalen Arnald, putting the Trojans up 7-0 after the PAT. Then just as quickly, Mariners’ tight end Miles Moore scored a touchdown, ending the first quarter with a score of 7-7.

To open the second quarter, Andrew Arias, who scored a fumble return touchdown in the Trojans’ last home game, would score on a 25-yard pass and bring the score to 14-7. In poetic fashion after changing the drive direction, the Mariners would eventually score their touchdown in the same end zone as the Trojans did just 20 minutes prior.

The Trojans would retake the lead with a rushing touchdown by Ethan Castaneda-Rojas; however, the PAT was missed, so the score was 20-14.

That would be the last time the Trojans were ahead, as the Mariners would lead a drive for a touchdown just before halftime and open the second half with another touchdown, shifting the score in their favor 27-20. CVHS would drive back and tie the score on their next drive before the Mariners did the same, followed by a field goal to make it 37-27 with the Mariners in the lead.

The Mariners would score a field goal and CVHS quarterback Gavin Perkins would go down with an injury. Trojans would bring it to within four points after a late touchdown; however, a Mariners touchdown would solidify their victory in the end, winning the game 49-34.

After another loss, the team is demoralized and battered with injuries. That being said, one can hope for entertaining games for the rest of the season.

Great article! Looked like a promising game for cv at first. Don’t forget the last touchdown trojans had at the very end
