Boys basketball team beats Monte Vista 69-60 at NCS

The CVHS varsity boys basketball team emerged victorious against Monte Vista with a 69-60 win in the quarterfinals of NCS, guaranteeing them a spot in the Northern California Basketball Tournament.

“Mr. Jones put a lot of effort into the team,”said sophmore player Andrew Garcia

Athletes Dawson Johnson, Derrick Clayton, and Jaylan McFerren played an excellent game. Johnson scored a career high of 35 points in one game with 24 of those points made in the second half of the game. Clayton scored 10 points and McFerren stole 18 points from the opposing Mustangs. Having won the quarterfinals, the Trojans moved on to the semifinals against the De La Salle Spartans.

However, the Trojans fought a losing battle against the Spartans in the semifinals of NCS. The number one ranked team De La Salle won 47-29 against the fourth-seeded Trojans.

“It was tough,” commented Garcia

Johnson and Clayton came in charging, scoring 19 points altogether, but Amadi Udenyi of De La Sallle sealed the Trojans’ fate by scoring 11 consecutive points in the fourth quarter.

“We go out there and give it our best,” remarked head coach Nick Jones.

The Trojans finished their season competing against Jesuit High School, on March 10, with a loss of 53-73. They won their first round of the Northern California Basketball Tournament against Bellarmine High, 54-48. Overall the Trojans finished the season with a 23-8 record.
