Biden addresses climate change through electric cars

Buying a car is a big commitment. There is a matter of choosing the color, style and especially the type of car. Electric cars benefit by reducing fuel costs and it makes electricity the prominent energy source rather than oil.

However there are many concerns that come to the forefront when one wants to purchase an electric car. When people think of electric cars, their minds automatically go to Tesla and its $104,990 model X that has a range of 351 miles. However there are many other styles within the Tesla models and even more alternative companies that provide more affordable electric cars such as Nissan which has a 2022 model Nissan Leaf which goes for $28,375 with a range of 149 miles. The issues with these other cars is that the range is not as expansive, which calls for more stops to charge up.

Now, President Joe Biden is pushing for the charging stations to become more accessible. In the past Biden has made ambitious goals to have 50 percent of the cars in the U.S. to be electric cars by 2030. To put his plan into action Biden signed his $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill on Nov. 15, 2021. All the money will be going to funding for electric vehicles, roads, bridges, transit, rails, and environmental improvements. The bill is providing $7.5 million directly towards helping increase electric car purchases and aims to create more than 500,000 electric charging stations. Biden originally wanted to spend $15 million for the charging infrastructure.

The Build Back Better legislation includes plans to address climate change and other problems. This would also further encourage the purchase of electric cars as there would be many tax benefits for those who purchase them. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing to see action of the bill before the end of the year.

This is positive news in taking more action against climate change, but the goal that the president has in mind may not reach it in time. It takes time for these many stations to be built. There should have been more action in previous years and even now there is always much more to be done.

I want an electric car but the range needs to be increased and I will probably not switch over until charging stations are as common as gas stations.

I agree that electric cars are very for today’s world, and will help with climate change. I think the only issue is that people do have the money to afford an electric car but the car can only go so many miles, and the amount of chargers are limited. In general, I plan to see more electric cars in the future and less emissions.

I definetly agree that a lot of people dont realize that electric cars are not always super duper expensive. It is great that The Build Back Better legislation is paying attention to this. Electric cars exist, and it is a shame that more people do not have them. This will definetly decrease the level of harmful chemicals and gases released into the air. And I think that in the long run, it saves money on gas anyways.
