Pops delivers “Good Times” with tears and cheers!

It has been two years since students have been able to sing and dance on stage for the annually loved Pops concert. Last year the concert was held virtually through a livestream on YouTube.

For Pops 2022, CVHS choirs are making a powerful comeback with their theme of “Good Times.” Directors chose the theme to reminisce on songs we grew up jamming and listening to.

With minimal help from choir teacher Laryssa Sadoway, students arrange and choreograph all of the acts seen in the concert. Directors of the show take charge in making the most enjoyable show possible. This year the choir directors are seniors Hannah Frazee, Anna Wolde, Lillian Manno, Abigail Chiu, Camila Marie Sacramento, Alexis Sasser and Ethan To. Nearly 200 students perform in the show.

“We wanted our comeback show to be joyful after returning from a difficult year of virtual learning/singing,”  said director Abigail Chiu.

Chiu and the other directors played a big role in allowing the show to be put together.

“I had no idea how much work being a director would entail, regardless I do not regret a thing. Having your mind be in a million places at once—choreo, arrangements, staging, tech, merch, and more—was extremely overwhelming; but as the show slowly came together, the sleepless nights all seemed to be worth it,” said Chiu.

“It will be challenging for me to let go of this position once the show is over as I, along with my other directors, tirelessly worked for three months putting “Good Days” together. The pressure and expectation to exceed/match past years is hard to let go of, nonetheless our blood, sweat, and tears have been poured into this show, and I hope you come/came to watch!” said Chiu.

Unlike the choir’s other concerts, the songs featured are all pop songs. This year includes many classics that everyone can sing along to like “Dynamite” and “Style.”

The concert is enjoyable not just for the audience, but for the performers as well. Students are able to showcase their talents like drums, piano, rap, dance and of course singing!

“It gives everyone in the choir program an opportunity to meet new members from different classes and it’s a very fun and casual event,” said senior Katherine Le.

Junior Ashley Huynh agrees that the experience is definitely unforgettable.

“It’s very fun! We sing songs with other people from different classes so you make new friends! Pops is definitely my favorite event of the school year!” said Huynh.

Do you love listening to pop music and supporting the arts? It is not too late to buy tickets for the highly anticipated concert! The show runs from April 7 to April 9 (with two shows on Saturday) in the Center for the Arts.

The POP concert was amazing, people really put a lot of effort into it, it’s glad to see a live show after the pandemic. The dancers and singers were great, they absolutely practice a lot for the shows and they delivered it in perfect ways. The concert is amazing, I hope to see it again next year.

  • This year was my first time watching pops, and I have to say that it exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed watching all of the performances and I could tell that a lot of work went into each and every one. Seeing some of my friends on stage and performing songs was a very entertaining sight to see, and hearing everybody cheer at the end made me happy. I can’t wait to go to pops next year!

The Pops show has happened since two years ago which is really a very long time compared to every year in person. It’s good that the choir classes are having the ability to do a fun time show in person to really show off the dancing and singing. It’s very great to hear that it was mainly the students who organized the whole show which really shows the leadership and their ability to lead other people. I heard that the show was really good and was a show that can’t be missed. I would have to agree with those people because it was a really good show and I hope that the years come after this year would just become better and better.

I was able to go watch pops on closing night and it was an amazing show with great singers and dancers. I was impressed with the choreography of each song as well as the students who showed off their voices with solos. Overall it was well worth it and I will definitely watch it again next year.

  • I really enjoyed watching pops and it’s amazing!

  • For the preview that I saw, the choreography and singing were pretty good for only having 2 months to learn all of that. The fact that a lot of it was student coordinated is also amazing.

Preparing to perform for this show was a lot of work but I feel like in the end it was worth being able to perform onstage and I enjoyed the time I spent with my classmates during the concerts.

This was my first year watching Pops, and I was so impressed! It’s amazing how the entire show was student-choreographed and arranged. I like how so many different choir students were highlighted throughout the show. My favorite songs were definitely “Cheap Thrills,” “Style,” and “Listen.” Well done!!
