Wiz Khalifa’s mixtape Taylorallderdice a “refreshing taste of the past”
Fans of rapper Wiz Khalifa who have been dedicated to his music since his earliest mixtapes were treated to a wonderful and refreshing taste of the past with his recently released mixtape, Taylorallderdice.
After Khalifa’s last project, his debut album Rolling Papers, failed to make a very lasting impact, many of his fans were left in a state of uncertainty and disappointment. Many began to wonder what the impact of Khalifa’s newfound fame and mainstream presence in the music industry would have on his music. Fortunately, from the very beginning of Taylorallderdice one can feel Khalifa returning to the relaxed and slow tempo of his old music that fits in perfectly with his lyrical delivery and smooth flow. The very first song “Amber Ice” sets the tone for the whole tape and, when I first heard it, I couldn’t help but notice my head bouncing to the rhythm of the bass. That’s when I realized the tape was something I wanted to listen to completely. With music nowadays, it’s hard to find a project that can keep me entertained from beginning to end.
The most interesting aspect of the tape is the on-going interview that Khalifa is having with a radio host about his life throughout various parts of the songs. It is very surprising to hear Khalifa answer questions that many people have wanted to ask but never really did. He addresses a letter that he wrote to his fans and shared throughout various social media outlets in which he discusses the reasons for his change of style recently and does something not many celebrities ever really do: he recognizes and admits that he may have made some mistakes with his music. I respect that a lot in anybody, especially someone whose career depends on having an ego that wouldn’t allow for apologies.
I had personally given up on Khalifa’s music prior to this tape, but even I have to admit that I may have been wrong. If Khalifa can keep this style of music consistent and still manage to explore his creativity, there is a good chance that he could become a staple in the music industry for years to come. Taylorallderdice is definitely a work of music that everyone who listens to hip-hop should take their time to listen to. From beginning to end, it’s just like the good ol’ days.
