New Mat Kearney album full of “gems”
Mat Kearney wowed fans world-wide with the release of his latest album, Young Love, which is available anywhere good music is sold (Target, Best Buy, iTunes, etc.). Never one to be monotonous or predictable in his music, he brings to each of his songs distinct personalities, catchy tunes, and unique stories to tell.
Kicking off the album is his no. 1 hit single “Hey Mama,” a fun, bouncy tune with a driving beat and words and melodies that will run through your head all day. He then switches gears with the cute and unexpected song, “Count On Me,” in which Kearney sweetly and appropriately incorporates auto-tuned children’s voices in a delightful call-and-response style song about friendship and love.
Kearney creates a personal favorite in the song “She Got the Honey,” which has both simple, catchy lyrics and a fun, pop-y beat made for blowing up amps and rattling license plates. He wraps up the album with a touching personal song, “Rochester,” a soulful yet optimistic song written from the point of view of his father.
I must admit, when I first purchased the album, I was slightly afraid that his songs would all sound the same, or that “Hey Mama” would be the only song worth listening to. I’m happy to say that I was utterly mistaken. Each and every song is a gem, and Kearney never loses himself in the world of auto-tune or techno features. His poignant messages and inspiring rapping in between catchy choruses only add to the beauty of his work.
