Major designs a new landscape

After the trees between 200 and 300 halls were removed, there was a lot of empty space. Students and staff alike were able to submit designs up until Feb. 15 to propose what they thought the new landscape should look like.

Out of the five submissions, the winner was Cathi Major, House Four secretary. Her design will be sent to the district office to be reviewed and her ideas will be used to influence how to use the space, although it may not actually be the final blueprint.

“There are safety considerations. The red maples shed and we are concerned there will be an issue with the leaves,” said Assistant Principal Matt Steinecke, who was in charge of the contest.
“I just submitted a design for fun and went according to the suggestions,” said Major. Her design proposes that the logs from the old trees be used as benches and that there be a raised bed, as well as alternate pathways.
“I wanted use the logs as benches in order to preserve the original history of the school because those trees have been there since the school opened. The raised bed is near the courtyard, and people can sit on both and talk to their friends,” she said. The alternate pathways would also be immensely helpful, as passing periods can be crowded and slow moving.
Since her design is not the final blueprint, the two things Major would like most to be included are “the pathways and the benches, because the benches help preserve the school’s history,” she said.
