“Bonnie’s Quest for Courage” helps kids embrace failure
“Bonnie’s Quest for Courage” by student authors Sammy Huang and Chloe Miao, follows the story of a girl named Bonnie who learns to face challenges with bravery. Beyond what may look like a surface-level plot, the book carries a powerful message of resilience, mental health awareness, and self-acceptance.
The children’s book, which spans 39 pages and is written for readers aged six to ten, is available on Amazon in paperback for $9.99 and for free with Kindle Unlimited. Despite its short length, its message is far-reaching
At a spelling bee, Bonnie is faced with the challenge of spelling the word “courage.” Despite failing to do so, throughout the book, Bonnie explores what courage means to her and her friends when she’s suddenly transformed into a duck in a translucent reality.
Huang explained that the inspiration stemmed from personal experience as well as witnessing the significant impact an influential book can have on adolescent minds.
“I was inspired to write the book because of a personal experience where a close friend of mine suffered the negative effects of a children’s book that perpetuated negative images of body image,” said Huang. “It made me realize how impactful books are to growing children, and I wanted to change that.”
“The story was inspired by our own experiences with anxiety and self-doubt, motivating us to write a story to empower kids to not only accept failures, but to embrace them. We hope our book helps children face their challenges with confidence,” said Miao.
It took both Huang and Miao a year to author the book, while they’d managed 15+ hour time differences over the summer. The two would meet at any bit of free time to discuss the book and went through many rounds of script and plot changes throughout the feedback cycle.
The two thanked those who had supported them along the way, including teachers Tina Johansson, Anne Parris, and their friend Kenta Kwong Hin Sang, who gave advice that changed the trajectory of the book.
At its core, the book looks to promote healthier coping mechanisms to approach changes and failure in life. Given that society as of now sets a lot of kids in competitive mindsets, it’s harmful to their self-confidence. “Bonnie’s Quest for Courage” also looks to push mental health awareness not only to older adults and kids, but also for a strong foundation to grow into.

Very nice
This is definitely a good way to educate children, using books that they actually want to read, and it’s good because it teaches them even before they have to deal with these things, so that they are fully prepared when they do struggle later in life.
Very inspiring to see the inspiration that a book can have on other people. I think embracing failures and being confident when facing challenges is very important!
The message of the book is inspiring, and I wish I had read a book like this as a kid. I think it is a topic that is still relevant to us in high school, especially with people worrying about college and AP classes. It is easy to worry about failing and get caught up in the cycle of school and homework, which really affects people’s mental health and self-confidence. I’m happy that kids in newer generations will have more positive books that show a different outlook on success and failure, and how to cope.
This is a really sweet and cool thing to do, and I think the effort it took to do this is inspiring and rewarding.
It’s super cool how you guys wrote and illustrated a children’s book!
I really appreciate that the authors saw the negative impacts of a children’s book on a friend and wanted to make a difference for future generations.
This article is so cool! I really like the message the book conveys through the art and writing.
This is really inspiring and sweet.
This a really nice and thoughtful thing to do and I’m glad that I got to read about it.
This is such a sweet and inspiring book! The thought and effort that was put into this book is amazing and the students are such thoughtful people for wanting to make a book to help other students.
This article was very sweet. It’s hard to come by reading articles that just embrace positive feelings while also managing to discuss difficulties. You have convinced me to take an interest in this book, I hope to purchase one for my younger niece!
