“Drag Me Home” puts spotlight on drag queens
Pink clothes. Huge blonde wigs. High heels. Glitter. House makeover. What do all those words make you think of? That’s right, Trixie Mattel! In her show, “Trixie Motel: Drag Me Home,” the famous drag queen and former winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” decided to take things to the next level and move in with her partner of seven years, David Silver. Together they remodeled the house of their dreams. This quirky and entertaining show gives us an inside look at Trixie’s personal life with her partner and her life as a full-time drag queen.
“Drag Me Home” aired in two parts this year in June. The show is available for streaming on Max and is a quick and funny watch. It is a continuation of Trixie’s first show from 2022, “Trixie Motel,” where she and David decided to buy and renovate their own motel in Palm Springs, California.
In this show, Trixie and David bought a $3 million house in Los Angeles and set a $150,000 budget for the renovation. Their challenge was finding a way to incorporate their individual styles into the house while staying within the budget. You get to watch the process they go through and decide what to change and what to keep.
The element of humorous scripted theatrics is entertaining but there is also a reality TV show aspect to it. Funny skits with guest celebrities make the show very amusing. Notable guests included Nicole Byer from “Nailed It” and Jonathan and Drew Scott from “Property Brothers.” These celebrity appearances add humor and widen the show’s appeal, making it stand out.
Trixie also gave the spotlight to more queer professionals in the real estate and remodeling industries. The interior designer they hired, Dan Vickery, brought talent and passion, excellently balancing Trixie and David’s preferences to create their dream home. Other examples are Nicholas Scheppard and Jenson Titus, known as Very Gay Paint on social media, who showcased their skills and gained exposure through the show.
They did make some questionable decisions about changes to the house but it’s a very Trixie and David look, which is exactly what they wanted. One change they decided on is taking out the mesmerizing, vintage, one-of-a-kind fireplace with a carved stone on it. Trixie acknowledged that it might not be everyone’s choice but no matter what you think about the finished product it’s definitely worth the watch.
For fans of bold design, humor, and somewhat trashy decisions, a little peek into the life of one of the biggest drag stars of our time, Trixie Mattel, might be what you are looking for.
