Swimmers qualify for state meet

CVHS boys swim team competed in the CIF North Coast Championship also known as NCS on May 2 and May 4 in Concord. Trojans made great times, qualifying for the state meet. Athletes Simon Li, Jeremy Francis, Wesley Hon, Edvin Sabanovic, and Nathan Nguyen all advanced.

“I was surprised that we qualified because of the rain and a lot of people had low expectations,” said Nguyen.

Trojans scored 54 points and achieved three new best personal records throughout the meet. Li, Francis, Hon, and Sabanovic swam in the 200-medley relay. They placed tenth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:36.77 and placed ninth in the finals with a time of 1:36.05.

“Since qualifying for NCS, our synergy throughout the events has improved a lot and we all have a really close friendship,” said Li.

Li competed in the 50-yard Backstroke, 50-yard Freestyle, and 100-yard Backstroke. The 50-yard Backstroke was within the 200-medley relay. Li caught a time of 23.86 seconds in the preliminaries and 23.88 seconds in the finals.

“I’ve been training hard at practice and I’ve put a lot of training into swimming in the past years and my sister qualified for states her junior and senior so this was a big goal for me,” said Li.

Nguyen competed in the 50-yard Freestyle and got times of 22.57 and 22.87 seconds. Nguyen was very pleased with his times and the outcome of the squad.

“I was very happy with my times. I believe I did good and this is my first time going into States so I’m really excited,” said Nguyen.

Li and Nguyen share a close bond in swimming.

“I wouldn’t have done it without my relay squad and my best teammate, Nathan Nguyen,” stated Li.

“I couldn’t have done it without my swimming competitor, Simon Li,” said Nguyen.

Trojan boys will compete in the CIF State Championship from May 9 to May 11.

“We are really pumped and ready for this competition, we are ready to advance further,” said Li.
