Cross country wins highlight Trojan sports week
CVHS cross country runners placed in two divisions at the Viking Opener Invitational on Sept. 13, with the girls team securing first place. The girls junior and senior teams placed first out of ten teams at the event. Some notable victories include those of Iliana Nierengarten, who placed second, and Mika Gomes, who placed fourth. Additionally, the girls open team stood out, placing first among eight teams running two miles. Catherine Murray placed second overall, while Tejal Bajwa placed third.
However, other sports teams also had some impressive achievements to share from the week of Sept. 7. The girls flag football team is grabbing crazy wins as they commence their second year. Currently, they are holding an 8-1 record. The team is filled with strong players, and they are prepared to defend their championship title.
Adding on to that, the girls water polo team is off to an undefeated season after the Trojans celebrated big wins against Northgate and Washington. However, the boys team shouldn’t be underestimated as they are currently 5-2, celebrating big wins over Piedmont, Berkeley, and James Logan.
Additionally, congratulations to the girls golf team, which recently took third at the St.Patrick St. Vincent Invitational on Sept. 15.
Finally, girls volleyball is aiming for a three-peat championship title. Specifically, senior Tessa Smith stands out. Smith recently earned her 1,000th high school career kill. At the game against Heritage, she got three aces, ten digs, and a season high game kills record of 29. Smith shows promise in both her ability and dedication.
“Everyday I come into practice I come in with the mentality to win. I walk in with intention and my best foot forward to be the best player that I can be,” commented Smith.
Smith encouraged anyone interested in joining a sport to give it a shot. She explained that it has been one of the most rewarding things she has done and how the community and camaraderie you build can be irreplaceable.
