Monarchs shut out Trojans, 2-0
The CVHS boys varsity soccer team suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Mount Eden High School, which stunned players and fans alike, on Jan. 15.
In past years, the Trojans had consistently triumphed over the Monarchs, leading them to approach the match confidently—perhaps too much of it. Right from the opening whistle, striker Dominic Bolender attempted to set the tone with an ambitious punt toward the Mount Eden goal. The Trojans worked hard to improve on past mistakes, prioritizing teamwork and frequent passing over individual play.
The first half saw the teams locked in a tense stalemate. Despite their efforts, the Trojans couldn’t capitalize on their chances, leaving the score tied at 0-0.
“We should be winning against them!” shouted coach Juan Escalante during his impassioned halftime speech, urging his team to step up.
But the second half unraveled quickly for the Trojans. Just minutes in, the Monarchs found the back of the net with a perfectly placed shot into the top right corner. Hans Giesler, the Trojans’ goalie, dove valiantly but came up short. Before the Trojans could recover, Mount Eden struck again, extending their lead to 2-0.
Unlike previous years, the Trojans fell short, leaving the field with a humbling defeat. The loss marked a significant shift in the rivalry, as Mount Eden claimed a hard-fought victory and the Trojans lost their third straight game.
