A Long Time Coming, Girls Flag Football
For as long as CVHS has had boys football, many have expressed support for girls football. 2024 is the year that that wish was finally granted. After many years of an annual girls flag football game, CVHS has finally made it an official sport. This will feature an end of season playoff and a varsity and junior varsity team.
Flag football has a few different rules than football, with seven players on the field instead of 11, removing the offensive line except for a center. Additionally, there are two 20-minute halves with a five minute halftime, the field is only 80 yards not including the endzones, and there is no kicking or punting. Points after touchdown will be added by going one play from five yards for one point or ten yards for two points.
“All women deserve the chance to play any sport that they want to,” said Elena Robuchon, varsity team manager, on the importance of girls football. “I am very excited that these women get the chance to play football that is an all ladies team. I think that it is a very unique opportunity and we are very lucky to have it.”
“I’m very happy and proud that I’m part of the first women’s flag football team! Especially because this is my last year of being a high schooler, it’s a great way to end my high school career,” said senior Carrie Lee, who is on the varsity team.
Obviously, for all fans of football and of girls sports, this is a big win for CVHS. It means that there is finally a girls version of every boys sport offered at CVHS. The whole school is excited to see the team play. Go see their first game in Trojan Stadium on Sept. 17.
Congrats, can’t wait to see how far y’ll can go!
As a part of the first flag football team, I believe we are doing great with our games and I hope more people come and watch our games like they would for tackle football.
