Trojans fight hard against O’Dowd

CVHS baseball suffered a humiliating defeat on Tuesday, May 7, when the Trojans fell 3-2 against rival Bishop O’Dowd.

Trojans had a shaky first inning featuring a controversial call on O’Dowd’s Cole Jones for interference with the CVHS third baseman, though he still makes the catch and throws normally. The umpire called Jones out for participating in a dugout chant. Had that call not happened, O’dowd would have had the bases loaded with only one out which could have drastically changed the course of the game in their favor.

There was an uneventful top of the second and third due to pitcher Michael Olsen’s dominant performance across the game. The Trojans would score one run in the bottom of the third which would be followed by solid pitching on each team until the last inning.

As the seventh inning rolled in and Olsen remained the pitcher, there were murmurings in the crowd of him throwing a Maddux, a complete game without allowing the opponent to score in under 100 pitches. It appeared closer and closer with every pitch one ground out followed by a strikeout. But then with two outs, the Dragons scored three runs to take the lead after a Trojans error. Jones would get his revenge for what he perceived as a poor call early in the game by making it to home and putting O’Dowd in the lead.

Shocked Trojans fans watched the team attempt to rally in the seventh and score one run to bring the team back to a one-run deficit. But it would ultimately be fruitless as the Trojans fell 3-2 against O’Dowd, one of their largest rivals.
