Poetry Power: “Freight Train”
The Olympian is excited to share “Freight Train” by freshman Jordan Page. “This poem was originally made to bring awareness to abusive relationships, but it can be interpreted in other ways,” she said. “I have many poems on misogyny and mental illnesses. I read a lot of angsty fan fiction, so that’s where I got this idea from! I decided to capitalize some words to add more emphasis, like where it says, ‘Mindlessly Bluffing.’ This is made to point out the lies that trick people into staying in abusive relationships.”
Freight Train
You play,
You slay,
While I wallow in dismay.
I continue to pray
But the tides never change.
One after another
No Mercy,
Ruthless Suffering,
While you continue Mindlessly Bluffing.
Yet I’m Huffing and Puffing
Constanly fluffing
Pillows of Pain
And trying to make them go away.
But my effort is in vain,
You continue to maime.
You are the Lion,
I am the Crane.
I have the brains,
Yet you get all the gain.
You’re beating us down like rain
One,
After another,
After Another
While we cannot Escape
You have us Bound to the ground
With Steel Chains
You’re Sadistic,
You’re Insane,
When will you end,
Your Horrid Reign?
And let us have Freedom to Attain.
You’re addictive,
Like Cocaine.
We are contained
Yet we don’t complain
Though we frequently,
Mercilessly Question,
This Freight Train.
