Honoring Dr. King: A Community United in Reflection and Action
The Castro Valley community came together on Jan. 20 to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day with its fifth annual celebration–a vibrant and inclusive event aimed at commemorating Dr. King’s teachings. While the gathering highlighted the experiences of African American families, it attracted a diverse audience united by a shared commitment to Dr. King’s message of justice and equality.
Held at the CFA, the celebration featured contributions from students across various schools and grades, each reflecting on the event’s theme: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
The morning began with a heartfelt performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black national anthem, by the Black Student Union (BSU) students from Castro Valley Elementary School. This powerful opening set the tone for a series of moving presentations.
Students took the stage to share their interpretations of Dr. King’s words through essays, poetry, artwork, and even rap. The creative responses showcased the depth of understanding and connection these young individuals have with Dr. King’s enduring legacy.
The program culminated with thought-provoking speeches by high school seniors Naomi Melak and Diego DeLaRosa-Laday, who are prominent members of BSU. Both students shared personal stories that tied their lived experiences to Dr. King’s teachings, resonating deeply with the audience. Their speeches earned a standing ovation, and they were later surrounded by proud friends and family offering praise for their heartfelt contributions.
Chabot College President Jamal Cooks, one of the event’s keynote speakers, expressed his admiration on Instagram, calling the celebration at CVHS “phenomenal.” He extended his gratitude to Superintendent Parvin Ahmadi, Jaliza Eagles, and the planning team for organizing what he described as an outstanding community event.
This year’s MLK Day celebration proved to be a resounding success. Events like these not only honor Dr. King’s legacy but also strengthen connections within the community, reminding everyone to carry forward his vision of unity and justice.
