Winter Ball, to Attend or Not?

When the lights are off, the doorways are littered with paper snowflakes and fairy lights that crisscross the ceiling; 600 Hall feels completely different from its normal bustling energy during school hours. The dim entrance opens up into the bright cafeteria, alive with students singing their hearts out on the karaoke machine, the flash of the photo booth capturing silly poses, Leadership serving Krispy Kreme, and white and blue decorations bringing students into a Winter Wonderland theme. Other than prom, Winter Ball is one of the year’s most decorated and activity-filled dances that all students are welcome to attend.

Besides the amenities offered in the cafeteria, you’ll find students in the main gym dancing the night away under flashing lights and fog machines, under the energetic commentary of a DJ – a lot like the Homecoming scene with considerable extensions.

Even so, Winter Ball is still not as popular as that first dance of the year.

“It’s really hot in the gym,” said senior Marley Sepulveda when asked her opinion on the dance. “You end up being all sweaty and it’s smelly in there.”

In past years, students have also opted out of attending because of the $35 price for tickets, which is over $10 more expensive than Homecoming.

This year however, the price has dropped to just $20 and features a gaming truck for friends to “battle it out” all night long. Ticket money gained from ticket admissions is administered into the Leadership account, which funds the rest of the year’s student activities, including prom.

“My personal opinion is it is a great way to hang out with friends in another dance setting and it has other experiences if you don’t want to dance,” said senior Kiana Ayllon.  On Jan. 25, form your own opinion and experience Winter Ball for yourself by arriving in semi-formal clothing at the old wrestling mat room.
