Garvey and Schiff battle it out for Senate seat
This upcoming November, not only will people in California be voting for the 47th President, but they will also be electing a senator. This year’s Senate race will be between the Republican candidate Steve Garvey, former first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, and the Democratic candidate Congressman Adam Schiff.
Garvey’s Senate campaign focuses on improving the lives of all people living in California. Garvey says his experience playing in the MLB taught him that, “It’s not about the individual; it’s about the team.”
Garvey’s economic plan when he gets elected to the Senate is to reduce unnecessary mandates that lead to excessive inflation, create tax relief for middle-class families to alleviate the financial burden, and push for balanced federal budgets that will reduce national debt for future generations.
Similarly, like Garvey’s economic plan, Schiff’s plan is to build an economy that works for everybody and create a middle-class tax cut. However, unlike Garvey, Schiff wants to make housing more affordable, use more government programs to benefit the citizens of California and increase taxes on corporate profits.
Another key issue both candidates address in their plans is climate change. Both candidates pledge to combat climate control and protect California’s environment. Although both of the candidates’ policies have several similarities, they also have various differences.
While Schiff supports increased governmental regulation in the environment, Garvey wants to abolish regulation that restricts water access and innovation and supports the creation of more free-market-driven approaches to energy production.
The final major issue the candidates address in their plans is housing. Unlike other issues, both candidates seem to have the same housing plan. In their plans, Garvey and Schiff write about their intentions to increase housing in California and lower the rising prices of housing.
Schiff writes, “Increasing the availability of affordable housing is my top priority, and I will fight to make this plan a reality,” which indicates that upon getting elected to the Senate, he will truly work for Californians to receive the affordable housing they deserve.
At the same time, Garvey, in his campaign, writes that if Californians are worried about housing, they should vote for him because he shares their worries and like his opponent, will work to get Californians affordable housing.
Although a presidential election is way more important for voters, people shouldn’t forget about the Senate race occurring this year also because who wins might have an immense impact on the lives of California residents for the next six years, so don’t forget to go out and vote this year in the Senate election!
Informative article, and it was nice to read about a separate, more local race. Seeing that it’s a race for a district located pretty close to the urban areas in SoCal, Schiff will probably win, unless people feel like having a former baseball player as a senator would be cool.
