Scholarships available to CVHS seniors

Senior year is stressful, with the period of applying to different colleges and scholarships being the most worrisome. The Castro Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) can help to relieve some of that stress. CVEF lists all of the local scholarships open only to CVHS seniors.

On the website, www.cvef.org, the applications for scholarships are available; applications are also attainable through Melanie Small in the Career Center. The deadline for submission for all applications is April 1.

Only one application will need to be filled out for all the scholarships, which range from $200 to $20,000. Qualification is based on anything from athleticism, ethnicity, interests and GPA.

The following scholarships are available for CVHS seniors who meet certain qualifications.

The Dr. Mary Jane Stamm Scholarship offers $20,000 ($5000 per year for four years) for promising students with financial need. Requirements include at least a 3.5 GPA and submission of SAR.

The Castro Valley Rotary Endowment offers $1,500 and $2,500 scholarships for students of all skills and interests with financial need. This includes one scholarship for a student who will attend a junior college or vocational school.

The Joe & Elaine Pasqual Education Scholarship offers $1000 to a student who is interested in a career as a primary or secondary school teacher.

The CVHS PTSA Community Service Scholarship offers $500 to a student who has demonstarted outstanding community service or volunteerism. Requirements include PTSA membership and a minimum 2.5 GPA.

The Chuck Fehely Memorial Scholarship offers $500 to student athletes.

The Dr. Joshua Fong Memorial Scholarship offers $500 to students of Chinese descent.

The Felix Elizalde La Raza Education Fund Scholarship offers $500 to Latino students interested in mass media (radio, Internet, news, magazines, TV, journalism, or related technical fields), and with financial need.  They are also offering a $250 scholarship to Latino students with career interests in graphic design, visual arts, photography, illustration or related fields, with financial need.

The Castro Valley Education Foundation scholarships offer $500 for students exhibiting academic excellence and interest in the sciences, or those interested in teaching careers.

The Sunrise Rotary Scholarship offers $500 to well-rounded students of all skills and interests.

The Body By Pam Scholarship offers $500 to a CVHS Senior who demonstrates the principles of healthy living and strives to exemplify these principles in his or her everyday life.

The Eden Medical Center Scholarship offers $500 to students who seek careers in the health sciences.

The Castro Valley Arts Foundation Scholarship offers $500 to graduating students who have participated or supported performing or visual arts events held at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts.

The Charles Schwab & Co. Scholarship offers $500 to students who have completed business or economics coursework and seek careers in business or finance. A minimum 3.75 GPA is required.

The CVHS Athletic Boosters/Gene Johnson Scholarship offers $250 to $1,000 to students athletes who have participated in varsity sports at CVHS. The student must be enrolled in a college or trade school program, and one letter of recommendation is required from a coach, teacher, mentor, or other adult.

The Charles Duerig Memorial Scholarship offers $300 to a student who has interested in engineering, band, running sports, boy scouts, mountaineering, or attending Columbia University.

The Law Enforcement Scholarship offers $300 to a student interested in municipal law enforcement who desires to take classes in ethics, administration of justice, constitutional law, history, philosophy or other liberal arts program of study.

The Arts & Design Scholarship offers $250 to students interested in the Performing or Visual Arts, Graphic Arts and Design, Industrial or Landscape Design, and similar majors.

The Eden Emergency Dept. Nursing Scholarship offers $200 or more to outstanding students interested in a career in nursing.

The Bill Southam Memorial Scholarship is being sponsored by Castro Valley High School Science teachers to honor a beloved colleague who recently passed away. Bill Southam was a chemistry teacher at CVHS for 17 years after spending 20 years in the agricultural industry. The scholarship will honor one student who has taken Honors Chemistry and is interested in a career in the sciences.
