Wilkinson brings joy through guitar
CVHS’s Grammy-nominated guitar teacher stands out amongst his students as a favorite, leaving long-lasting impressions and teaching skills that students will carry with them long after high school.
Steve Wilkinson has made music his lifelong journey. With over 20 years of experience teaching, he brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and personal experience. Additionally, Wilkinson is an Integrated I teacher, helping students prepare for higher levels of math.
Wilkinson was previously nominated for a Grammy award by a student’s parent who saw how carefully and diligently he taught and cared for his students.
“I really appreciate how he doesn’t rush what he teaches and takes the time to build up subjects while also making sure to go back and review material. His words of encouragement and wisdom also push students to do better,” senior John-Paul Krowicki reflected.
Wilkinson’s journey with music began at an early age, but not with guitar.
“I started playing violin when I was around eight,” recalled Wilkinson. “I switched to guitar around 13 because I wanted to play rock music, and the violin wasn’t quite cutting it for me.”
This pivotal moment led him to discover his love for the guitar, setting the stage for a career that would combine both musical and educational passions.
In high school, Wilkinson played in a rock band, an experience that further fueled his desire to immerse himself in music. “We just got together and messed around, we played every week and it was similar to a garage band,” said Wilkinson.
Upon graduating, Wilkinson pursued music composition in college, alongside other studies. Pursuing music allowed him to dive deeper into the theory and structure behind the music he loved, and also allowed him to make the switch from rock to jazz. “I needed to find something stable,” explained Wilkinson.
Now as a teacher, he encourages “My favorite thing would be seeing students doing unique things that I haven’t thought of,” said Wilkinson. Throughout his guitar class, he encourages them to try new techniques and play songs in different ways.
Many people know that it can be difficult to pursue music or art and make a living from it. Prior to becoming a teacher at CVHS, he taught private lessons, where he honed his skills as an instructor. The then made the transfer to becoming a teacher, where he offers lessons that range from beginner to more intermediate and advanced levels.
“I really enjoy being able to work with more advanced students, talking about theory and being able to experiment with different pieces is really cool,” exclaimed Wilkinson.
