Girls Learn advocates for education
Girls Learn International is one of the many clubs CVHS has to offer. GLI is a larger organization with lots of smaller branches which can be found across the states, the club here at CVHS is one of them and has been a club offered to students here for quite a few years now.
“We are the Castro Valley chapter of Girls Learn International, a global organization that empowers girls and promotes universal access to education for females. We raise money for our sister school in Sierra Leone, organize menstruation product drives, and work with other clubs to increase awareness of global civil rights problems,” said club President Raynee Lin.
GLI is an organization that is devoted to help bringing access to education to girls and women across the world. This branch at CVHS is constantly working on and promoting this idea by spreading awareness of and raising money for girls in situations where things such as schooling are unfortunately inaccessible. The club is able to accomplish these goals by working together as well as through a number of fundraisers such as selling items at the school’s annual flea market, volunteering, attending in person and or virtual trainings held by bigger branches of GLI, and their annual menstrual products drive. In one of their weekly meetings they all came together to build and decorate the donation boxes for the drive.
In a typical weekly Thursday meeting you are likely to find them discussing important issues concerning women’s rights and education and overall wellness, as well as teaching and informing others about significant women who have fought for change in our society. Members do this all through fun and interactive conversations. They also prioritize team building activities throughout their meetings as a way to get more people involved, and as a fun way to get to know their fellow club members.
This club is truly a great opportunity to meet other students who care about the same causes as you. It is a perfect space for anyone who has any interest in these matters. They meet every Thursday in room 501 at lunch. Everyone is welcome to come share and collaborate on different ideas and events concerning women’s health, rights, and education!
