Girls water polo gets a big win

As dense water splattered about along with the swift flying of an obnoxiously yellow ball, Trojans were clearly determined to make a stand against Encinal High School. With the CVHS girls varsity water polo team sweeping the sets against the Encinal Jets with an impressive score of 14 to 4 on Sept. 24 at Chabot College as well as the CVHS girls junior varsity water polo team splashing in 13 to 3 against the Jets, it remained obvious Trojans absolutely dominated the pool on their fateful Tuesday. 

With field stats of 14 goals, 12 assists, and 12 steals for the Trojans, the Trojans dominated the game against the Jets. 

”I feel like we really showed Encinal what we’re capable of because they’ve been a team we’ve historically lost to,” said girls varsity water polo player Stella Chang. “I think I took on a more defensive role in that game and set up my teammates for really good plays and goals.” 

Despite taking a more defensive position in the game, Chang was of great contribution to the team victory as not only did she end off the match with two assists as well as two steals, but she even managed to snag a goal in the process. 

Of course, in order to pave the way to victory, both defense and offense must be secure to give opponents a tough time within the water. Trojans shared appreciation for their teammates. 

“I thought that we had a great game on Tuesday against Encinal,” varsity girls water polo player Dasha Kryuchkova added. “Our communication has made great improvements throughout our games and has helped create opportunities to score on offense and help back and prevent shots on defense.” 

Every player’s contribution led to an exquisite victory. Adding another two points to the Trojan shared win, Kryuchkova scored two goals in Tuesday’s game along with a steal and an assist, being another major team player for the Trojans.

JV water polo girls shared similar sentiments regarding team communication. “Our team played amazing plus we played in sync as a team and connected our passes. The communication was on point which played a major role in us winning the game 13 to 3,” JV player Lexi Cordero exclaimed. 

“Our team works incredibly hard and has a great team dynamic in and out of the water,” commented varsity player Jena Wong. “Not only do we have great offensive skills but impressive defensive plays as well! This season has started well and will continue to improve.”

“Our win against Encinal was a great team win. Everyone went in the pool and did their job. We had a great game defensively, only letting Encinal score four goals. This was our second win in league and 11th win this season,” said coach Bailey Barlow, when asked about varsity’s victory.

As the season progresses, the Trojans will continue to make for great games for CVHS to celebrate.
