Trojans raise $8,707 for families in need

As the holiday season approaches, the annual Adopt-A-Family program at CVHS started and ran from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10. This year, Castro Valley Outreach (CVO), a local non-profit organization, adopted 12 families and set a goal of raising $5,000 for them by the end of the fundraiser.

This year, Trojans raised $8,707.20, which is almost $4,000 over the original goal. Twenty-five classes raised over $100, with rooms 914 and F2 raising over $1,000! This money went to help out 12 families, including 25 children this year. The leadership class spent a weekend shopping for perfect gifts with the money raised.

“Our CVO program could not do it without their amazing help and the entire CVUSD.  All schools participate by adopting families as well as the district office.  We usually have about 120 families apply for holiday assistance and this year we saw a huge influx of need and our total went up to 236 families which is over 400 CVUSD students! We don’t turn anyone away and we were able to get all families adopted,” said registrar Chrissy Becerra.

With almost double the number of families that donated this year compared to previous years, CVO and the CVHS leadership programs were able to buy lots of gifts for families in need.

As Covid has impacted many jobs, many families have fallen victim to these unfortunate circumstances and are unable to provide gifts or toys for their loved ones. CVO, with its Adopt-A-Family program, was more determined than ever to make the holidays during the pandemic as stress-free for those who are struggling. With the unity of our fellow Trojans, the seemingly ambitious goal was easily surpassed, and by a big margin.

Good job Trojans!
