Max Meier leads JV football team to success

Eyes scan the field, looking for an open teammate to pass the ball to. Defense is too tight with no one available to receive the pass. Making a quick decision, Max Meier chances it and runs the ball down 50 yards. One man to beat, he keeps running to the end zone and… score! Meier scores a touchdown against James Logan!

As the starting quarterback on the CVHS junior varsity football team, Max Meier shocks the crowd with his scramble and CVHS is left celebrating.

“I’ve learned the benefits of teamwork and how it’s important to communicate with your peers,” said Meier.

Since the days of flag football in middle school, Meier has invested his time in this sport. He’s continued to grow into the great player he is now since seventh grade.

He has been working to strengthen his football skills in an effort to become a good quarterback. Meier shows improvement even though he is still in the same position as he was during his freshman year.

As a baseball player, Meier came up with an idea that he could possibly throw a football fairly well. Passing the ball from time to time, he wanted to try out being a quarterback. 

From watching a lot of football growing up and being a 49er fan, Meier developed an interest in playing quarterback.

One of the things Meier enjoys about playing quarterback is how he gets to control the game.

Controlling the next move, next action, next play, did get him going. However, he also liked how that concept connects to how he’s gained a closer connection with his teammates. 

Because of their strong bonds, his friends ultimately encourage him to play football even more.

“Max is a great player on the field, but most importantly, a great person off the field. He always helps you keep your head up, and generally is a nice and funny person. But most importantly, he has the best ‘cellies’ of all time,” said Jaden Carter, a fellow teammate of Meier’s.

Carter helps highlight the sportsmanship-like qualities in Meier.

Meier receives encouragement from his peers, but he equally provides that same support for his teammates.

“I’ll be there for my teammates. I can help them with their grades and give them advice. And I’ll basically just help them off the field if they have any troubles,” Meier explained.

Meier is motivated to continue pursuing his quarterback position by increasing his skills through off-season practice and also by watching and observing professional quarterbacks.

Out of this entire season, he’s made three personal touchdowns. But most importantly, he helps the team strive for victory by assisting in plays like the shining quarterback he is.

“I’m going to continue to play football because I enjoy the people I’ve met during football,” Meier said.
