Trojans score big at WACC championships

Trojans girls and boys made a big splash at the WACC championships on April 26 at Chabot College. JV and varsity boys took first, clinching gold with a score of 283. Girls placed second with a score of 57.5.

Trojans came to the meet ready and prepared.

“Everybody knew what to expect and the old swimmers helped the new swimmers,” said JV swimmer sophomore Dillon Ta. “I’m not surprised that we won the championship; the energy was really good and everyone was hyping each other up.”

The meet started off with a 200 medley relay, with the boys stealing the lead from old rival Piedmont and getting an ending time of 1.37.52 and a score of ten. Piedmont followed by just two seconds. Girls placed third, 0.1 seconds behind Piedmont with a time of 1.54.02.

“I had a difficult time with the 200 relay since I’ve never done that event before, but I ended up getting a personal best so I’m glad,” said JV swimmer freshman Tia Ngov.

Piedmont got ahead in the 200 free and 200 IM, but the Trojans made a comeback in the 50 free with junior Simon Li and senior Jeremy Francis swimming past Piedmont’s senior Tom Rolefson. By a matter of milliseconds, Li took first with a time of 21.19, and Francis stole second from Piedmont with 21.83.

“The 200 relay was definitely a highlight of the meet for me. We got a good enough time to qualify for state,” said Li. “I would like to thank my 200 relay squad Edvin Sabanovic, Jeremy Francis, and Nathan Nguyen.”

Freshman Khanh Seaton carried the Lady Trojans to second place in the 50 free with a time of 25.10 and a score of six. Seaton took second again in the 100 free with a time of 56.19.

“I felt good about my timing even though I feel I didn’t do my best because I felt challenged against the other schools,” said Seaton.

Piedmont boys got ahead in the 100 fly. Li came back and took first for the boys in the 100 free with a time of 47.28 and a score of 8.

“I was very happy with my time and my hard work benefited me in the end,” said Li.

Girls chased Piedmont once again placing second in the 200 free relay with an ending time of 1:44.47 and score of five. CVHS boys took first at 1:26.23 with a score of ten in the same event. Varsity’s Dasha Kryuchkova took third in the following event, 100 Back, with senior Mathew Jewell taking fourth place.

Trojan girls place second in the 100 Breast. Boys followed in third place. The final event started and the girls swam into fourth just one second behind Berkeley. The boys placed fifth.
