Girls softball remains positive despite setbacks

The CVHS girls varsity softball team suffered a home loss of 11-5 to Liberty High School on March 20.

The game was plagued from the start, with injuries and substitutions.

“I had to be subbed because of an injury. I took a line drive to my thigh and I was experiencing shoulder pain from overuse,” said senior Jesymae Olympia. Olympia had volunteered to be pitcher this season because “unfortunately, we were out of one.”

As a result, senior Katella Lazaro played as pitcher for the game.

“I stepped up because the team needed me,” said Lazaro. She had not played pitcher for several years, but did so anyway for the game because she felt “supported by my team and coaches.”

Throughout the game, the girls cheered each other on, yelling their teammates’ names from the dugout with chants like “Good eye,” and blasted songs such as, “Rich Baby Daddy,” by Drake. Before each inning on the field, the team passed the ball to one another, their matching beaded bracelets highlighting their team spirit.

“I always give my all when supporting my teammates because they always cheer and hype me up, so I gotta pay it back to them,” said Olympia.

Despite the early setback and odds against them, the Trojans played to their fullest until the very end, when the game concluded during the seventh inning. Several Trojans had successes, with Jayla Morales and Giselle De Casas each getting two runs and two RBIs (runs batted in).

The CVHS girls varsity softball team remains spirited, supportive, and focused on moving forward after the loss.

“I was happy to see [the energy],” reflected coach Nicole Manley. “Everyone was happy.”
